So you have started a blog and are now trying to increase your number of page views.
How do you do that?
Below are 10 tricks we use to increase our blog page views. We don't think one is any more important than the rest, but by doing all of them together over time, you should see an increase in your page views. As with anything, it takes time and hard work.
1. Pictures / Pretty Blog Design
Let's be honest, most people will make a decision on whether or not to read your blog in the first few seconds they open your page. Is your blog page uncluttered? Is it organized and easy to search and find posts? Are your pictures bright and pretty? Does your blog load quickly? If not, you might want to take a little time to fix these problems. People are very visual and want to follow a pretty blog.
Also, make sure you have edited and proofread your posts before you publish them. There is nothing worse than reading something and finding spelling and punctuation mistakes. Along with this, is making sure your posts are easy to read and understand. Have a family member or friend help you proofread if you need to. We are lucky in that we write this blog together. So we always read each others post before it gets published.
Readers want to know they can count on you. Whether it be daily, every other day, or three times a week. Post at the same time and stick pretty close to that schedule. If you post on a sporadic schedule, your readers could get frustrated and stop coming to your blog. Sometimes it can take trial and error as well as following your reader numbers to see what schedule will work best/be most beneficial to your blog.
3. Create a "Series"
If you have great information to share, break a longer post into 2-3 smaller posts to keep readers coming back! Maybe it's three days dedicated on ways to organize the kitchen, bath, laundry room. Or do a week of bundt cake recipes. One article of clothing worn 3-4 different ways is another way to get readers coming back to see what you'll post tomorrow! You can give a little teaser of what's to come.
4. Give your readers a reason to read
Why should someone come and read your blog post? People are looking for a place for entertainment or to solve a problem. You need to provide this for them. It could be tutorials on how to do something, advice or tips on a certain subject, recipes, outfit solutions or a printable. All of these give a reader a reason to come to your site.
These types of posts are resources that your followers can come back to later, share with friends, or pin to Pinterest.
This is an area where we are still working and learning. SEO (Search Engine Optimization) is simply knowing what people are searching for and providing it for them on your site. It takes a lot of time and hard work to increase your ranking, but it's so important for increasing page views. Here are some easy starts to increasing your SEO:
Make sure your post title uses strong search keywords.
Before putting pictures into your blog post, rename the image from IMG_234.jpg to distressedboyfriendjeans.jpg. Name the picture something you think readers will be looking for.
Just because you write a post, doesn't mean people will automatically come read it. You have to put your posts and blog out where people will find it. There are so many different avenues for this. Here are some of the ways we promote our blog.
Link up parties are a great way to share your post. Many bloggers host link up parties on their site that any blogger can submit posts to. All of their readers can see and then follow the link back to your site. We add our posts to about 6-10 link up parties each day and host our own Link Up every Tuesday. We will be doing a follow up post in a couple weeks on how to host your own link up party.
You can also do a guest post for a fellow blogger or company. Basically, you write a post and it goes up on someone else's blog. Again, this gives you the opportunity to have all of their followers see your great work and hopefully then check out your blog.
There are a bunch of sites that you can submit your posts to. Style Gawker, Food Gawker, Dwelling Gawker and Craft Gawker are fabulous sites for this. They are very picky about only taking good quality photos so make sure you are constantly working to better your photography.
Comment on other blogs. We spend so much time just browsing other fabulous blogs and leaving comments on their posts. Be sure to leave good quality comments. Always leave a link back to your blog with your comment.
7. Social Media
Make sure you take full advantage of all the social media sites. This is where everyone is these days. Have the icon links at the very top of your blog page where readers can easily find them.
Make sure you put your blog posts up on each of your social media accounts.
Facebook is probably our least favorite (It just hasn't clicked with us so far), but we still put a picture and a link to our blog post every day.
Instagram is our favorite social media site! I mean, who doesn't love to scroll through and look at beautiful pictures!! The key to Instagram is pretty pics.
Google Plus is good for search engines so make sure you are adding all of your posts.
Pinterest is a huge platform. Make sure your blog pictures can easily be pinned by your readers. We have a pin it button that pops up on each of our pictures.
Bloglovin is another fabulous site! It is a collection of blogs. You can easily follow all of your favorite blogs right from that site. People can search and follow a wide variety of blogs. Then they are updated through email with new posts. All that is needed to sign up is your RSS feed. Then when you post your blog, it automatically loads onto Bloglovin. Love that!
8. Network with other bloggers
One of the most important parts of blogging is interacting and making friends with other bloggers. You can support each other, share blog ideas, work together on projects, guest post on each others blog, etc.
How can you find other bloggers?
We have found some bloggers that live in the same area as us on Instagram.
Facebook groups are another great way to make blogger friends. We are part of 4-5 different Facebook groups and have learned so much from each of them. One group in particular has daily threads where we can comment on each others' blog posts and Instagram posts. Some groups require you to request access to their group.
9. Email List
Have a subscription box near the top of your blog page, easy to find. Once a reader subscribes to your blog, they will then receive an email every time you publish a post. They might not look at your post every day, but they will see the email and be reminded of your blog.
Many bloggers also have a window pop up after a reader is on their site for a few seconds. This pop up window has another link to subscribe. We are thinking of adding this to our blog. Sometimes we find them annoying when we are reading someone's blog, but they are supposed to be very effective at gaining more subscribers.
Pinterest is so big, it gets its own category. This seems to be the go-to for finding anything these days. Anytime we need to search something, whether it be a dinner idea or a craft idea for the kids, we both always go straight to Pinterest.
Make sure you have a pretty Pinterest board with plenty of boards and topics. Choose pretty pics with bright colors as your board covers. Add great descriptive title words to each board. We have a couple boards that are solely for our blog posts and content. But you can pin a picture under more than one category.
Then start pinning!! The more your pin, the more followers you'll get.
Join other boards that you can add your pins to.
When you add your pictures, remember that long pictures seem to do better. They take up more space and are therefore more likely to be seen and repinned.
Collages also do really well on Pinterest.
The prime time to pin is evenings and weekends. Make sure you spread your pins out, don't do them all at one time.
We hope these tips help you increase your blog following.
